Rich,
This is Frank Kolodziej, one of 2 bowhunters you met at Steamboat Lake Campground while showering up from the hunt. Hope you made it back to Milwaukee safely. We tried your evening hunt idea that Sunday night, after a few wrong turns. We thought we found the crossing motorcycle trail you mentioned and hiked in 2 miles. Saw one Cow as a motorcycle was approaching, and pushed something on the way out. What I didn't realize was that we were on the wrong trail North of what you suggested! When I bought and studied the map you showed us, I could see clearly that we were out of Unit 214 (opps) and getting close to Nipple Peak !! We took Iron Mountain road, and I now see we should have taken the road that goes to Hahns Peak Lake marina. I will give it a final try on the last Sunday morning.
Anyways, I have been reading your book and find it full of helpful tips. No wonder you see game, and we see white butts! How was your hunt? What was the final tally on Elk? I believe you had told us that second weekend that you already had 2 bulls down and your son was headed up. Pictures?
I wonder if you'd consider coaching/guiding a couple of unproductive hunters (Guy Schiller and I) next year in that area? We could go the traditional fee route, but I may have something better to offer you! Attached are pictures of my Camp right in the heart of SBL area. It is on the ridge on the backside of the peak on the south side of SBL. Easy access on a dirt road off Rt. 129, directly across from Pearl Lake . It has bedding for 6, and a woodstove(although we do not use during bowseason due to scent issues). I'd be honored for you and your clients to use it, in exchange for some guiding. We moved to Colorado 5 years ago, and fell in love with the SBL area. But, I'm lost when it comes to Elk hunting, particularly in that area. I'm sure you're probably thinking "give away my many years of research?" Well, I can tell you Guy and I only hunt together 4/5 days each season, and never bring others. Just not worth it. So you would be educating 2 guys, that have 2 sons approaching teen agers. But that's it.
Not sure when you'll pick up this email, but you wrote your phone number in the book I bought. I'll call you to discuss later this week.
Thanks.
